TerraVentoux was created in 2003 from the merger of two village cooperative wineries in the Côtes du Ventoux: Les Roches Blanches in Mormoiron and La Montagne Rouge in Villes-sur Auzon. These wineries had sold good wines in bulk to other entities for redistribution, but without their own identities. TerraVentoux has taken advantage of the clean slate to launch a line of wines designed to appeal to various tastes based on the older wineries’ good practices. The results are encouraging, and First Vine is the first in the DC area carrying their wines. Font Nouvelle is a 100% organic red wine made from 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. While most wines from the cooperative come from a number of producers, this is a single-vineyard wine. The particular farm that grows the grapes for Font Nouvelle has been farming organically since 2000, in response to UNESCO's declaring the Mont Ventoux region a Biospheric Reserve in 1999. The wine is a beautiful purple color and has a tannin kick -- be sure to open it 30 minutes before serving. Serve it with pizza, Mexican food, red meats, and aged cheeses.
